In the fall of 2006, the residents of Santa Cruz County approved a half-cent sales tax increase to fund the formation of a jail district and construction of a new facility.

Construction of the new complex was completed in the fall of 2010. The county 911 operations moved in November 11, 2010. The Sheriff's administrative offices moved in January 2011. The adult inmates moved into the detention facility April 2011.

In December of 2011 the Superior Courts, Justice of the Peace, Constable, Clerk of the Court and Probation Department moved in as well as the inmates of the Juvenile Detention Facility.
